Tea Room ‘Jaku-in’ Selected as a Finalist in the 4th Japan Wa Culture Grand Prix”

The tea room ‘Jaku-in’ at Sony Computer Science Laboratories (Sony CSL) - Kyoto Research has been selected as a finalist in the 4th Japan Wa Culture Grand Prix. This prestigious award is given to outstanding works that blend traditional Japanese culture with modern technology. The designer, Norio Toyama ( Millieme Co., Ltd. Sen Art Studio), has been recognized for his achievements.

‘Jaku-in’ is a tea room that uses 3D sensors installed on the ceiling to spatially and temporally record the space within the tea room. This allows for the re-observation of human body movements and the arrangement of tools from any perspective, supporting the learning of tea ceremony etiquette, which involves physicality. Mr. Norio Toyama has created a new form of tea room by incorporating modern technology while respecting the aesthetics of traditional tea rooms. With this selection, ‘Jaku-in’ has been highly regarded as a work that will shape the future of Japanese Wa culture.

Sony CSL will continue to respect and value traditional Japanese culture while pursuing innovative research and development. For more details on the Japan Wa Culture Grand Prix and the list of finalists for the 4th edition, please visit the following website.
