Sony CSL – Kyoto

Sony Computer Science Laboratories – Kyoto (Sony CSL – Kyoto) was founded in 2020 as the third and newest branch of Sony Computer Science Laboratories, Inc.

Our mission is to explore alternative paths of technological development, that are truer to human values, cultures, and traditions.

The lab is built on the recognition that the many wonders of modern technological advances — despite their undeniable allure and benefits — have also produced a range of unexpected, detrimental effects on our individual and collective well-being. Through our research, we wish to bring renewed attention to various values that have been sidelined or marginalized in our relentless pursuit of ever-increasing efficiency, 24-hour entertainment, instant gratification, automation, etc.

A melting pot of current and historical perspectives, the lab is a microcosm of the city of Kyoto, an ancient capital where the old meets the new in often unexpected ways.

We respect disciplinary expertise, but are not bound by it. We uphold scientific rigor, but are willing to take on roles beyond those traditionally expected of researchers.

Sony CSL was established in 1988, when IT was still an emerging technology with vast but largely unfulfilled potential. Now, it has grown into a titanic force that continues to reshape our world in numerous ways, backed by a global pool of innovators. We believe that such transformations call for a change in how technological research is conducted.

We aspire to be home to a new breed of researchers that challenge conventional ideas of what constitutes research, and leverage their expertise in novel ways to make positive, tangible impact to society.

The lab is located in the heart of Kyoto, and operates as a tight-knit team led by director Jun Rekimoto. Our lab culture is best described by the dictum "take your time": a call for quality over quantity.

Open positions are advertised when available. As a rule, researchers at Sony CSL – Kyoto are expected to develop their own, original research plans and pursue them autonomously. We welcome applicants with audatious research proposals that transcend mainstream trends.

We are open to collaborations with external institutions, and also occasionally accept lab visits. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you are interested.
